The Critical Thinking Co.™ sent us their Science Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles, and we have really enjoyed doing these together! We found the puzzles were perfectly on grade level, and challenging enough to be fun- not too easy, and not too hard.
The topics covered include:
- Living Things
- Earth’s Land, Water, and Resources
- Our Solar System
- Matter, Energy, and Forces
- The Human Body
- Science and Scientists
- Inventions and Discoveries
In the back of the book there is also the vocabulary list, which is great when students come across a word they’re unfamiliar with or have forgotten. The answers to each puzzle can be found in the back, this is a great help to parents checking work. We have really enjoyed doing these puzzles as a family. Sometimes after dinner with daddy, or after lunch while coloring, I will read the clues and the kids will take turns answering.
I also had my 2 oldest (3rd and 5th grade) take turns doing puzzles on their own for school. I especially love crossword puzzles because spelling is essential to getting them correct. At the top of each page is a word bank to help fill in the puzzle; of course when we do these orally my kids don’t have the word bank so they are using what they know. Sometimes I will have to direct them towards a specific word, using the answers they give me. It’s a lot of fun doing them this way!
The Science Vocabulary Crossword Puzzles is a 62 page book, with 25 crossword puzzles. The cover is thick and glossy, with nice crisp white pages. The pages are thick enough to not bleed through and really don’t shadow either.
I think most kids who enjoy doing puzzles, madlibs, and other logic games will definitely enjoy doing this book of crosswords. The topics are so much fun, educational, and cover everything across the board- from all the types of animals, to the branches of science- the puzzles vary in difficulty. I’d say it is definitely appropriate for the suggest grades, but my littles (5 and 7yo) are able to join in just fine when we do these aloud.
