If you’re here, and a homeschooler, your family is probably like ours- always looking for great, family friendly books. We are so excited to tell you about Light of Mine, by Allen Brokken, and its accompanying products from Towers of Light Christian Resources LLC. This is going to be a wonderful addition to your family library, and the Light of Mine Unit Study – Premium is a great note booking style workbook full of activities, pictures to color, and comprehension discussion questions. This is a homeschool bundle you will enjoy for many years to come!
We received the book Light of Mine, its unit study, the pathway personal mp3 players, as well as USB drives with the mp3 files. Ya’ll, my kids loved this book. It’s great for ages 6+, and is considered a middle grade Christian fantasy … think Wingfeather, Narnia, Green Ember. It’s going to be a wonderful addition for Christmas or birthday gifts, and I even think adding it to your church library would be a wonderful gifts for families.
What Is It?
Light of Mine is book one in the Towers of Light series; Allen Brokken has written an exciting, sweet, Christian fiction series that will capture the hearts of your kiddos. With chapters like Honoring the Sabbath, and Finding the Source, families will find the adventure and God honoring themes a delight! Within the 222 pages, Lauren is left on the farm with her younger brothers to fend for themselves while their mother has gone searching for their father, who has joined the Mighty Mercenaries to fight the Dark One. Their community is introduced to an unknown man, and the children must use discernment in their new life, including knowing where their faith is found. They adventure with their only 3 weapons, their faith, and 3 pets to fight the Dark One who is destroying the heathlands. The back pages of the book do include some discussion/comprehension questions, as seen below. There are several blank pages in the back of our copies, which may be a good place to write out any answers.
The Study Guide
We received Towers of Light Christian Resources for 3 students who are 12, 10, and 8. My 6 year old listened on the MP3 player, and enjoyed it immensely. Her favorite part was “… when the children were on their own, while their mother went to find their father. She says she likes this part the most, because the brothers and sister were sweet and loved God.” ♥️ She would bring me the MP3 player and put the bud in my ear so I could hear the music, which was a rendition of Little Light of Mine, or funny parts that she was giggling about. She just loved it!
The accompanying Light of Mine Unit Study – Premium walks through the different themes of the book, which cover:
- Shinging Light
- Facing Trials
- Armor of God
- Holy Spirit
The answer key can be found in the back of the guide, and is very clear. I love that the print throughout is large for young readers, and the directions are clear. The unit study is designed specifically for homeschoolers to go along with the Christian fantasy series. I love that more Christian authors are putting out guides to go with their books- this is so helpful for those that need to show documentation of comprehension, keep portfolios, etc. But it is also just fun for kids! They can color while mama reads aloud, or just work in it on their own time for fun.
The activities inside the premium study guide include crosswords, mystery phrases, memory verse copywork for handwriting practice, and discussion questions. I love that students are to keep a reading journal, which is something that I wish we had started for all our books when my children were small. Even just drawing pictures when they’re old enough is such a great way to remember books and what we have read. I really like that the study guide is developmentally appropriate and easy to adjust for all ages and abilities if needed.
The story passages and chapter assignments in the study include thoughtful questions which definitely encourage Biblical discussion; I was surprised by how much my 6 year old got out of listening to the book, and her ability to make beautiful connections from the story to the Bible. My 8 year old enjoyed reading parts of the books to me, and working in the unit study on her own. My 12 year old flew through the book, and the unit study was a lot of fun for her. After reading the book, she listened on the MP3 player and like the music and narration as well.
