Easy Homeschool Grammar {with Easy Grammar Systems- a review}

Easy Grammar Systems is one of our favorite homeschool curricula-we’ve been reviewing Easy Grammar:  Grade 3 with my just turned 9 year old 3rd grader. We love using Easy Grammar for all ages here, as it is really easy to follow for everyone. The price is right for a large family, it isn’t time consuming for kids or parents, and it is thorough.

What is Easy Grammar Systems?

This is a 480 page grammar program that is easy on students, and on parents. Simple for my 9 year old to use independently, effortless for me to check her work, and just as easy for her to check her own work! We use the teacher edition, which has an answer page on the left, and blank workbook page on the right. I had my daughter work directly on the blank page in the teacher’s edition- but Easy Grammar allows for making copies of this page, or you can purchase a student book.

Some parents may not be comfortable with letting their child work directly in the teacher edition, I was fine with it. We simply fold the page back, and she works on the blank page. She is able to check her work using the teacher’s answer key page, and if she has any questions, I help. =) Sometimes she likes to write it in her language arts writing notebook, but it just depends on what the lesson covers.

Lessons

Each lesson is quick! It takes maybe 10-15 minutes for her to complete a lesson, and anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes for me to review and help her.

Topics covered include:

  • prepositions
  • verbs
  • nouns
  • adjectives
  • conjunctions
  • interjections
  • adverbs
  • types of sentences
  • probouns
  • capitalization
  • punctuation
  • writing formal notes, friendly letters, and sentences.

I like that Easy Grammar 3 starts by identifying prepositions; once a student knows how to identify a preposition, they can identify a prepositional phrase, thus eliminating many errors later (parts of speech cannot be found in a prepositional phrase). We took this opportunity to introduce simple typing. I had my daughter type up the list of prepositions on the computer and we printed it off to keep handy. She quickly memorized the prepositions in a sentence by typing them!

Easy Grammar Prepositions

Within the above grammar topics are lessons on so many other grammar topics-compound subjects and verbs, direct objects, contractions, common and proper nouns, possessive nouns, degrees of adjectives, adverbs of all kinds, personal pronouns, capitalizing all the proper nouns and their punctuation (city, state, abbreviations, geographical locations, etc), and more! Easy Grammar 3 is thorough!

Units are finished with review and a test over the topic learned; there are teaching notes for the teacher, with great explanations on how to teach the writing portion. The writing section can be taught as you work through the book, or saved for the end of the book. Some lessons include games and activities:

We have really enjoyed using Easy Grammar Systems, and plan to finish out with this great program. I love the independence it gives my children (my 7year old uses the 2nd grade book) and the freedom it gives me!
