Read it With Me Wednesday {Jeremiah 8:8 part I} with Wisdom Wednesday Linky

Yes, you did in fact read that correctly.  “Part I.”

Go ahead.  You know you want to.

I wrote it all out, and it was just too much.  It was just … too much for me to do at once.  So, here it is.  Part I.  =)

I was reading through my Bible the other night.  Trying to find what it was God had me looking for (this was not related to Read it With Me Wednesday).

Then I came across a verse in my absolute favorite (well, one of my favorite books) book of the Bible.

“How can you say, ‘We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord’, when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely?”  Jeremiah 8:8

Well, next to that verse was an asteric.  I mean, I know I put it there at some point, but I don’t remember doing it.  And I was just pulled.

Let me back up…

After God placed it on my heart to read, and re-read this verse, I started doing like Beth Moore in that video I posted the other week (obviously I am no Beth Moore, but she was the first person to come into my thoughts).  Saying, “no, no.  Not me.  They aren’t ready to hear it, and I am not ready to write it.  So no.”

Then tonight rolled around, and I needed my verse for the week.  Despite my best efforts, I just couldn’t settle on one *ehum, yes, I was avoiding the obvious* and then I gave in.  “Fine then, I will just write about Jeremiah 8:8.  Fine.  But it will be short and sweet!”

That led me to reading about the entire book of Jeremiah.  Again.  Only this time I just seemed to have a better understanding of it all.  better.  Though probably not perfect.

That is my back story to this post.  Now here is the back story on the book of Jeremiah.

The book of Jeremiah was in fact, written by Jeremiah.  It is his letter to Jerusalem, Judah’s capital city.  His letter, or message, to Judah was written in a last ditch attempt to save them, before God allows Babylon to sweep the country away.

That is right, God was going to let the country go (not was, does .. but anyway).  Give it up because of its ways.  The ways of the world.

“The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped.  Since they have rejected the world of the Lord, what kind of wisdom do they have?  Therefore, I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners.  From the least to the greatest all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.”

Jeremiah 8:9-10

God recognized the country for the state it was in.  It was abound with deceit, wrong doing, and people turning away from God.  He sent Jeremiah to prophesy about their downfall.

Jeremiah told God, “Sovereign Lord, I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”  and God told him, “Do not say I am too young.  You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.  Do not be afraid .. for I am with you and will rescue you.” {Jeremiah 1:6-8}

“Then the Lord reached out His hand and touched my mouth and said to me, “I have put my words in your mouth.”  Jeremiah was then appointed by God to “uproot and tear down nations, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.” {Jeremiah 1:9}

God told Jeremiah he was going to summon the “northern kingdoms” to come and take over Jerusalem.  “I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me .. in worshiping what their hands have made.”  (idols)

The Lord goes on to lay out the charges against the nation and explain why he is turning them over to the world, for their deceitful ways.

“What I have given them, will be taken from them.” {Jeremiah 8:13}

The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away.

When we foresake him.

When we forget him….

But He also brought back the land of Judah.  This time, under a new covenant.

Now, all of that to say, I believe in Jeremiah 8:8, God is telling the people those who have been teaching, writing, and shouting the Word of the Lord have been doing it falsely.  They have been doing it in such a way that it pleases the WORLD.  Not in such a way that pleases the Lord.

“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine.
