Fermenting Food with an Airlock System {Fermentools}

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

fermentools fermentools

Our family enjoys all kinds of fermented foods. A few of our favorites include cherry tomatoes, kombucha, kraut, and kimchi. We are having a lot of fun using the starter kit from Fermentools. Along with making nutritious, fermented foods, our family has had fun learning about the science of fermenting and bacteria. Yay for probiotic rich foods!

Fermentation is the process of bacteria or yeast breaking down a substance, in this case, food. When fermenting kombucha tea, the sugar feeds the SCOBY (or mother bacteria, so to speak), and the SCOBY converts the sugar to a fermented tea. When fermenting kraut or other fruits and vegetables with lacto-fermentation, you use whey combined with a little Himalayan salt, to produce super healthy, good lactic bacteria that ferments the foods.

The pink or gray Himalayan salt used in the fermentation process doesn’t make the food extra salty- it keeps the produce fresh, crunchy, preserves vitamin content, and can slow the fermentation process to allow flavor to develop more fully- all while preventing bad bacteria from growing. The recipe I used this time was from the Fermentools website, a basic jarred sauerkraut.

For this recipe, I simply chopped my cabbage, mashed it a bit using a small pounder to release it’s juices, and then packed in a jar.

We covered with a brine made from the pink salt, then placed the glass weight on top.

Fermentools Kraut Recipe and simple Airlock System

Then to the top of the jar we added the rubber canning gasket, screwed on the stainless steel canning lid, plugged in the stopper and the airlock, and we were in business!

Fermentools Kraut Recipe and simple Airlock System

After about a week we had delicious, pungent kraut! This is full of probiotics, and nutrients- a perfect addition to sandwiches, and suppers.

As you can see, the kraut changed from a lighter green/yellow to a darker color.

Fermentools Kraut Recipe and simple Airlock System

Our kraut turned out delicious! This recipe was very similar to a super market kraut, but with much better crisp and flavor … and of course all the nutrients and probiotics you don’t find in the supermarket brands.

We love that fermentation boosts the good-for-you value of our fruits and veggies. It can make regular vegetables so much more appealing to children and adults, it’s fun to do, and with the starter kit, it’s so simple!

No crock or jar burping needed with the Fermentools starter kit. The airlock system does all the work for you. At first I had a little bit of water come up through the air lock, because I overfilled my jar ?‍♀️  Which the directions specifically said not to do. But after I poured that liquid out, we didn’t have any more problems and it didn’t affect our food or the fermentation process at  all.

You will notice as you ferment, if you remove the lid and airlock, there is a strong scent- sour but not spoiled- coming from your food. That’s the bacteria multiplying and doing it’s job! You will not see mold or anything growing on your food (that’s a bad sign), but you will see bubbles in the liquid, and often a slight change in color.

The airlock system from Fermentools makes fermenting absolutely fool proof. It’s so easy to ferment using just salt, and now you can do it without needing to constantly give attention to your jar. Once your fermentation is done, remove the lid and airlock system, rinse with warm water, and store away. Replace the lid with a plastic lid, and your fermented food can go to the fridge to keep. Ours keeps a *long* time. Like … I know we have had kraut last months.  But it’s really so good you will find reasons to eat it with everything!

I love how simple the airlock system is, how complete the starter kit is, and how easily it stores away without taking up space in my kitchen. This is a go to for any real-food foodie in your life!

Homeschool Science Online- Chemistry

Homeschool Science online

Disclosure: I received this product free through the Homeschool Review Crew.

We have been using Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science, Young Scientist Chemistry, for some science fun this summer. This course is for grades 4-7, and is a self paced course. Because it is online, you can do it anytime with as many students as you’d like. Self paced makes this course as slow or fast you your family feels comfortable. I have some kids that will fly through self paced courses, and others that like to take a little longer.

For the Young Scientist Chemistry course, there are 13 classes, plus an intro that covers a little information from parents and student.  Classes cover:

  • note taking and test taking
  • the scientific method
  • creation, the atom, matter & quantum mechanics
  • the periodic table (2 lessons)
  • elements, mixtures, and compounds
  • chemical bonding
  • the mole
  • states of matter
  • Density
  • Radioactivity
  • Ph- acids and bases

The course includes easy print out study guide pdfs for each lesson, divided into parts, 1-4.

Homeschool Science online

We have really enjoyed these lessons. My almost 3rd grader tagged along with his almost 5th grade sister. They were both interested in it, but my daughter specifically requested doing chemistry, so it was of more interest to her and at her level.

Homeschool Science online

Classes are lecture style and Professor Landry is so easy to listen to, and is also easy to understand-which is so important for online learning. Lessons include some visuals on the screen, which correlate with the PDF study guide. I recommend printing the study guide before class, that way students can make notes as they go along through the class.

The PDF study guides include activities and worksheets for filling in information for class, which helps the student with note taking and completing their work, as well as comprehension. There are great charts included in the PFDs as well. My daughter loves visuals and reading over notes, so we find the printable guides super helpful.

This is a great way for parents to assess progress in the course, and show proof of learning for any requirements for their state or diplomas. We like making portfolios for our work, so Professor Landry’s guides are a great way to do this.

My children have a pretty firm foundation in the metric system, thanks to their math, so the metric system class was a great way to bring all of that information together, showing how it relates to science. We did one lesson a week, sometimes every other week, usually on Wednesdays. We loved the lesson for creation, the atom, matter & quantum mechanics. I like how Professor Landry handles creation and the topic of God’s creation, the analogies he gives for student’s to understand- we weren’t created from nothing. But instead purposefully, by our Creator.

Homeschool Science online

Classes build upon one another, so I do recommend going in order of the course. There is also review in each video we’ve come across, because students use knowledge from previous classes for the next.

We are super excited to continue on through the course, and continue our learning journey with Greg Landry’s Homeschool Science, Young Scientist Chemistry.

Homeschool Math-All Grades-with CTCMath

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

CTCMath Homeschool Online Math Parent Dashboard

Many homeschool families are looking for an easy to use, online math program for their children. CTCMath is a full online math program, covering all grades, kindergarten through 12th, including calculus. We know there will come a day when my children may need more help than their math books and I can give them, and CTCMath will be a great option at that time. (I have blurred out names and email address in the images below).

CTCMath Homeschool Online Math Parent Dashboard

After logging in, families will find pre-recorded video tutorials with directions explaining step by step each math concept. They are easily accessed any time, anywhere via your account. I found these lessons to be clear and easy to follow along, making it like sitting in class listening to a teacher.

In the parent dashboard, parents can add each student, selecting their grade level and where to begin on lessons. From there, students can login, complete their lesson, and take a quiz over what they just learned. A lesson summary can also be downloaded for each lesson. I love this because we enjoy making math notebooks with concepts my children may need to revisit. It helps make it hands on, too.

CTCMath Homeschool Online Math Parent Dashboard

CTCMath Homeschool Online Math program

Topics may have multiple lessons, which are all in order for the student to follow. The quiz questions on each lesson can be read to the student by clicking the speak button next to the questions; this is a great option for early readers, or students who better comprehend by listening. Weekly revision sets help consolidate learning and identify areas of struggle. In the CTCMath parent dashboard, you can find extensive reports making tracking easy for parents and record keeping.

Parents can set tasks, view results, and see the history of what students have been working on.

There are also some really fun games found at the bottom of the screen: speed skills, times tables, and swap pieces. I have to be honest and say these are a lot of fun, and will definitely help your kids find motivation to do some extra math learning. These are a great rewards for having completed math lessons for the day or week.

CTCMath Quiz grade 5 Homeschool Online Math program

Maybe one of the best parts- CTCMath offers a 12 month guarantee- I don’t know any math curriculum that backs their program with such confidence! Overall, this program is definitely going to help improve math learning for students. If you family is looking for an online, video based learning option, CTCMath is where it’s at! Between the easy to follow lessons, simple tracking, and fun games, kids and parents will both enjoy this math.

Homeschool History with Home School in the Woods

Home School In the Woods History

We have enjoyed using Home School in the Woods to supplement our history before, and this time we loved it as well! We’ve been enjoying their Time Travelers U.S. History Studies, and it goes along perfectly with our American History this summer. We are working through the Time Travelers: The American Revolution pack, for hands on learning in our homeschool.

Home School In the Woods History #americanhistory #ushistory #ustimeline #timelineofamerica #timelines #historicaltimelines #timelinefigures #americanhistorycurriculum #timetravelers

This summer we have been working through fun history projects, and my kids have loved it! I have to be honest- I’m not a fan of putting together units with projects… and that’s where Home School in the Woods Time Travelers have come in. After reading our history, I usually search for a video to watch on YouTube, recapping what we just learned. Then we take to the projects in our pack, at the family table.

Our favorite has been making newspapers! The kids had so much fun with this- even though the packs are suggested ages 8+ my 6 year old loved joining in. So if you have younger kiddos, I say definitely let them tag along. We like doing these as a family because everyone can work at their own level, and do their own activity. Younger children will enjoy coloring the pictures, and pasting in a notebook. There are so many ways to adjust these history studies for all ages.

Parents will find each download has a folder with lessons, a folder with correlating, labeled projects, as well as instructions, photos, and a resource list. Everything is easy to find, print out, and simple to use. Finding each project in the photos provided in the download is very helpful, especially for kids that need to see what the finished project looks like (or this mama, who is super visual).

The pack contains 25 lessons that can be completed in 5-10 weeks, or as you choose. They cover all of the politics and conflicts that launched a new nation, including the French and Indian War, George vs George, government, taxing, the Boston Tea Party, and so much more! You can view the scope and sequence by selecting the scope/seq tab midway down on this page. I love how they cover not only the big, most well known events and people, but lesser-known events that happened and people that affected the war and revolution- like women of the war, and battles in the south.

Home School In the Woods History #americanhistory #ushistory #ustimeline #timelineofamerica #timelines #historicaltimelines #timelinefigures #americanhistorycurriculum #timetravelers

I have found these projects to be meaningful, interesting, and helpful for my children to remember what we’ve learned together. We really love putting together lap books, and I can’t wait to do that soon. We’ve been so busy with baseball, and celebrating sumer with friends we haven’t had a chance to get everything put together, but we will!

Included in the Time Travelers: The American Revolution masters are the timeline figures! The set included for this pack can be found here,  but there are so many sets to add for all your homeschool history studies. Home School in the Woods offers several different sets of timeline figures and have added some new ones recently- check them out!

Emergent Reader Fun with one More Story {a review}

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew

You may have seen me posting about One More Story over on Instagram. This has been so much fun for our family. One More Story is an app (or website, we tried both ways, but settled on the iPad app), where children and families can enjoy being read precious picture books. There are currently over 87 books to choose from, on five different book cases, with more to come!

One More Story-the best picture books read aloud any time, anywhere

After logging in, there are different ways for children to use the program. First click on the book cover to hear the title and author/illustrator. Then:

  1. Select the book you want to read, then click the green button below it
  2. Click Bendy, the bookworm site host, to have the book read to you, and pages turned automatically
  3. Click the green arrow in the bottom right corner to have the book read to you with the pages turned manually. You will continue touching/clicking the green arrow in that spot to turn each page.
  4. Click on the I can Read badge on the left to read a book on your own, with the sound track turned off. Any word can be clicked to hear it read by the narrator. Click the E in the lower left of the text post to hear the entire text read. Children can “echo” back the words.

There are also vocabulary words for each book (woo hoo!- I see a whole creative unit to be made using books from One More Story).

In both automatic and manual modes, the words are highlighted as the narrator reads, which is a proven way to help emergent readers understand text on a page- this is similar to following the words with your finger while reading to children. Pointing to/highlighting the words in a book teaches early readers that words have meaning on a page, and that we read left to right on a page. These aren’t just valuable, they are necessary pre-reading skills for children. Thank you One More Story, for adding this into your program! Emergent readers are actively learning, while reading a book, which is just what we want as teachers.

When a book is read in the I Can Read mode (number 4 above), any word the child clicks to have read to them, is added to the My Word List. This gives a young reader the opportunity to identify, review and master words that cannot easily be sight read for them. When a word is mastered, it can be dragged on My Learned Words. The My Word List badge is displayed on the last page of a book so that children can review the words they have learned from that book! This is such a great motivator, and an easy way to see how far your children have come. (Below I’ve added the word said to the My Word List.)

One More Story-the best picture books read aloud any time, anywhere

I love that the books have background noises/music to go along with them. The stories really are brought to life in this way; it makes them more real, and reminds me a lot of watching Reading Rainbow (throw back!). Maybe that is because it is original music by Sesame Street vet Robby Merkin. These stories are books we have on our shelves, or would like to- and that’s how I know they’re high quality. No twaddle here! Plus the narrators are just delightful-so much expression and easy to understand/listen to voices.

We found a new favorite book, Rattletrap Car, by Phyllis Root. This farm family is getting ready for a trip to the beach. But on their way, first a wheel falls off, then the floor falls out, the gas tank falls off, etc. Each time there is a catastrophe, the children have a creative way of fixing the car from their packed goods. (This is the perfect chance to make a family book club/activity and enjoy some chocolate marshmallow fudge delight. Mmmm) There are so many sound words (onomatopoeia) in this book, kids are going to love it! Mine definitely did, as did I.

We have really enjoyed using the One More Story subscription in our home. It is going to be perfect for a cross country car ride to the beach this year with young children. We are also going to enjoy adding it in as part of our summer homeschool.

Gary LeVox solo album- One on One- Worship Music

Gary Levox, lead singer and co-founder of the beloved country music group Rascal Flatts, has released his own worship album. One On One is Gary’s solo debut album, fusing two of his biggest passions – music and faith!

Gary LeVox One on One Album Release

We haven been listening to this during our mornings while doing chores, and we love it! “While I Wait” is a precious duet with Brittany LeVox, Gary’s daughter; my girls love this track.

ONE ON ONE released May 21st from Big Machine Records and features artists including MercyMe, BRELAND, and more!

We like that $1 of every purchase goes to fight human trafficking through the Tim Tebow Foundation. This is something I can definitely get behind!

When asked about the role God has played in his musical journey, LeVox said, “I feel like God
graced us with a platform where we can not only touch people’s lives through music, but by being men
of God offstage too,” explained LeVox. “At those times when we are with fans that are going through
something like cancer, it is so wonderful to not only sing for them but to hold their hand and pray with
them. I want them to know that they have a friend in me. I’m not just some guy on the stage. I feel like
Christ has put me in this position because He knew I could handle the obligation, which often means
taking the time to lift someone up in prayer.”

The EP is out, so go listen today!

Giveaway: Get an 8×10 signed poster, by Gary himself.  To enter, leave a comment here telling me about your favorite worship music right now.

For a second entry, share this post on your favorite social media platform.

Note: This giveaway is limited to US winners ONLY.

Homeschooling Memory Work with Cross Seven

I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew.

We have added Cross Seven Ventures – Homeschool Musical Memory Tool online subscription to our morning time during breakfast. This memory work is set to Claritas Musical Memory Work songs. These songs are beautiful, and so easy to remember! We have loved this program.CrossSeven memory workInside the account dashboard of Cross Seven, parents can create a child profile for each child. Using the child profile, students can take quizzes on the memory work they are learning. Each child profile can login under the family account, which allows ease for parents to keep up with what everyone is doing, and tracking progress if desired. Our family chose to do quizzes together, and take turns answering quiz questions (though they all knew most of them) as a family. Memory work for us is an added bonus to morning time, and I trust the process enough to not feel the need for quizzes… BUT quizzes can be fun for kids, a great opportunity computer practice, and of course a way to track progress if necessary for homeschool reporting. You can also give children any name for their account, it doesn’t have to be their real name (I know some parents like to avoid putting their children’s name online, and I totally get that!).

The images and text on the videos of each song are meaningful, and memorable. Each week’s memory work consists of

  • Scripture
  • History
  • Latin
  • Grammar
  • Science
  • Math
  • Grogrpahy
  • Hymns
  • Timeline
  • Timeline Song

Families will find an easy to use program, divided into simple to navigate sections. Our family mainly utilized the Weekly Memory Work tab, but you can also navigate through the memory work by subject. Each memory work song correlates with a video; if you click on memory work by subject, you can scroll down to find hand motion videos for each song in that section.

There are 4 year cycles to work through, each containing 28 weeks of memory work. This provides a great foundation of memorizing facts, on which to build more in-depth knowledge later. We enjoyed watching the videos that went along with the songs in Cycle 1, as this is our first year doing memory work. But we are looking forward to Cycle 3, where we will move through some of the Psalms, the Industrial Revolution, learn about perimeter, and more!

Each week has correlating Fun Links, including how to create your own timeline book. We have a timeline book and love utilizing it, so I would definitely suggest making one to go with your memory work. It is not only a great keepsake, but of course documents student’s learning, while providing opportunities for kids to express what they’ve learned. They can write, draw pictures,  or dictate to a parent what goes into the book. So many opportunities for added learning!

I love that this online program is *easy* to use. While the program itself isn’t complicated, even simple programs can have difficult websites- but not Cross Seven! It is very intuitive for users, from logging in to navigating the website, anyone can do it. I also like that there is a Cross Seven Roku Channel! We love using our Roku for learning channels so adding this one was a no brainer.

My children have had lightbulb moments with this memory work! *Oh! Now I understand XYZ because the timeline song!* Honestly, I have benefited from the memory songs, especially in the timeline portions, because sometimes it is hard to remember the order of history. This makes it so easy and fun… we aren’t just doing rote memorization here. This is learning that students will apply to all areas of their education- (making connections is vital in comprehension: from text to self, text to text, and text to world. We aren’t talking about reading here, but the same thing applies. Children will benefit in making these different connections through the use of memory work. Ok-my education degree rant is over. ? )

Parents can also choose to order books, CDs, map booklets, and more products that align with their family’s memory work cycle, but this is not necessary.

Family Devotional with Bob Goff- Homeschool Morning Time, Bedtime

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the Homeschool Review Crew

Each night we read a chapter/section from a devotional, and often read a few stories from the Beginner’s Bible, to our children. The lst several weeks we have been using a new “devotional” and have really enjoyed it. Tommy Nelson Publishing so graciously sent us Everybody, Always for Kids , by Bob Goff and Lindsey Goff Viducich.
We love supporting theologically accurate books which teach about loving like Jesus and walking in such a way that reflects that. Everybody, Always for Kids  fits into our family perfectly. We have enjoyed reading a new story several times a week, before bed. My kids beg to read from this book, enjoy the lovely illustrations, and understand the lessons taught.

Everybody, Always for Kids by Bob Goff

The binding feels sturdy, and the thick, glossy pages should hold up well to many years of love. There is also a royal blue, satin ribbon bookmark along with an inscription page, making this a perfect gift.

Inside this hard bound book, parents will find 40 stories of personal experience, that help children see the world from others’ point of view, and help them understand how to love others well. Each story focuses on a different situation or feeling, and how to respond/go to action, from a biblical perspective. We especially enjoyed the Be Not Afraid-serving others, Trash Cans- about Pat who was an ordinary neighbor that did something small for his neighbors, and Land the Plan-about mistakes.

Sometimes our children have a friend in their life that is hard to love, be it at Sunday school, playdates, or co-op classes. Loving that friend doesn’t mean accepting what they do as okay, but it does mean we can love them anyway, just as God loves us no matter how sinful our choices may be. We can each relate to feeling outcast, different, or mistreated because of our differences.

Sometimes children see someone else who is being treated differently, struggling with their feelings, or sitting alone, and they may not know how to help them. But Everybody, Always for Kids , makes it easy to see the simplicity in kindness, and how that kindness shows God’s love to others.

I love that we don’t have to send our children into battle for them to be “salt and light.” God has made previsions for our children to impact the world through their words, behaviors, and kindness *right where they are.* He always meets us where we are. And it is true for our children as well- siblings, neighbors, at the grocery store, or with friends, they can love others.

This book sticks to topics that are developmentally appropriate for kids ages 6-10, so there won’t be anything too difficult to discuss with your children. My kids are 4-10 and have enjoyed reading it together (my 10 year old has also read it on her own for fun). I can tell they’ve been contemplating what we’ve read, when they come to me and want to talk about the story from the last day or 2 .  The stories are making an impact on how they see others.

Want some free bonuses? You can also head here, to sign up for some great bonuses from Tommy Nelson Publishing for Everybody, Always for Kids. This will include a fun, 5 lesson plan/activity pack for your family. It includes activities that reinforce the lessons in the first few stories. These would be a great addition to your morning time, or after nap hands on learning in your homeschool.

Vooks Curious George Vooks Curious George 2

Vooks brings storybook to life with fun, easy to understand voiceovers and beautiful animated illustrations. We found so many of our most beloved picture books while using Vooks, but also a treasure-trove of new books we’ve not read.

I have looked through the book selection, and have found only good, beautiful books that I wouldn’t mind my children reading without me. One of my favorite features, as a homeschool mom, is that the words are highlighted in bold letters as the book is read. There are also titles read aloud in Spanish, with Spanish text, which is great for those kids from a Spanish speaking home, or those learning the language.

Try Vooks free for 30 days! Go to VOOKS to sign up!

We use Vooks for independent time, for the kids to hear some book read aloud with great interactive illustrations. We set it up on our larger monitor desktop, and they can each take turns selecting the books they want read aloud. We have food this perfect for cold and rainy days this spring. Also, I get to listen along while I fold laundry, which is fun for me. I love children’s picture books; and we get to interact as a family. The entire site is kid friendly and parent approved (and not just by me haha)

Resurrection Sunday fun, with Miss PattyCake’s Eggstravaganza

This week, our family has had the pleasure of enjoying the new Miss PattyCake Eggstravaganza Activity package.  This package includes the new Miss PattyCake Eggstravaganza DVD, and accompanying activity book.

Miss PattyCake's Eggstravaganza DVD and Activity Book

My youngest girls loved the DVD episode! The songs were engaging, fun, and each one had a special connection to Jesus. The Easter eggs in the hold special meaning, each one containing a part of Jesus’s Resurrection story. The songs are familiar, because they’re often set to the tune of hymns we already know. But the words of each song, while simple and uplifting, were meaningful.

I love how everything in the episode points back to Jesus-His sacrifice, His love, and our hearts for him.

Miss PattyCake’s Eggstravaganza activity book is full of fun activities for children! I would say 2-6 year olds will enjoy coloring, counting, tracing, and more. Each page correlates with a fun song from the DVD, enriching the experience and making it even more relevant for children.

Check out this NEW Miss PattyCake bundle for a FUN, musical, age-appropriate
telling of the Easter story.

Don’t have a DVD player? Check out Miss PattyCake’s streaming channel
